Alabaster Jar

Judy Cook’s “true nature” was apparent early on as a child when she lived outside more than in.  She could watch the bees landing on the yellow bell bushes for hours, catching them in a jar for a closer look, then releasing them to do their busy work.  She was also fascinated with ants and enjoyed squatting by their mini castles, sprinkling sugar on top, and bestowing blessings on the smallest hills that looked like they could use some help.

As Judy grew out of her tomboy stage and became a young lady she was drawn to natural remedies and beauty tips that use everyday, natural ingredients.  She remembers going to school one day with a mop of greasy hair after realizing that mayonnaise does not wash out so well.  She also remembers walking around with lemon halves suctioned on each elbow to smooth her crusty elbows.  She simply loved the idea of using plants to create natural health and beauty aids.

Now, having raised a family of her own, Judy has found the time to explore her creative interest in body care products.  She makes a wide variety of body care items including handmade bar soaps, deodorant, laundry soap, lotions, bath oils, and lip balms.  Soap making is her passion.  She loves experimenting with new combinations of essential oils.  Her favorite part of the whole process is cutting the soap in the morning once it has hardened overnight.

Judy believes that “natural” ingredients are better for your body and your environment, and handmade is better for you soul.  Judy also finds inspiration from her faith.  Her business name, “The Alabaster Jar”, comes from the Bible story that describes a humble woman anointing Jesus’ head with an alabaster jar of fine perfume.  Judy affirms, “My faith is the biggest part of this.  It is how I do it and why I do it.”

Look for Judy at the Foothills Farmer’s Market on Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 12 noon  and at Baskets by Phyllis, located at 201 East Grover Street, during the winter months.  Also, be sure to check the Cleveland County Arts Council’s calendar to sign up for a series of classes Judy teaches on making your own body care products.
