Founded in 2008, incorporated on May 3, 2010, and designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit effective May 3, 2010, Foothills Farmers’ Market operates three seasonal tailgate farmers market in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Our markets provide a direct connection to approximately 40 vendors with deep roots in Cleveland County and the surrounding region, including farms, nurseries, bakeries, meat & poultry providers, cheese makers and specialty foods producers.
Our Vision
Cleveland County is home to a dynamic local food system which unites producers and consumers in a common cause, where:
- Family farms and food-based businesses prosper by finding local marketplaces for their products
- Everyone has access to high quality, nutritious, locally grown food
- Residents understand the economic, health, environmental and social benefits of purchasing locally grown food
- Farmers markets grow, nourish and inspire community.
Our Mission
Foothills Farmers’ Market is a grower certified market that provides community access to the freshest local foods available anywhere. We value family farms, endorse sustainable food production practices and innovation, contribute to the health and prosperity of the local community, and support the creation of a robust local food economy.
Market Goals:
- Create a viable retail market for locally-grown fruits, vegetables, ornamentals and value-added products;
- Create opportunities for small and mid-size family farms to engage profitably in production agriculture;
- Improve public health through increased availability and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables;
- Reduce hunger and food insecurity in Cleveland County;
- Strengthen the social fabric of the community by building awareness and appreciation for local agriculture;
- Enhance tourism and retail trade in Uptown Shelby through spillover of market shoppers; and
- Foster entrepreneurial opportunities for small home-based business owners and youth.
